When you have lost the majority of your teeth, you need a full or partial prosthetic to restore function and beauty to your smile again. We can offer custom options for your smile, both traditional and hybrid, with the latter secured in place using dental implants. In today’s blog, your Shrewsbury, MA, dentist talks about our custom dentures.
The Impact of Total Tooth Loss
Dentures are designed to address cases of severe tooth loss, too advanced to be treated with individual dental implants or with a bridge alone. When you develop this severe of a case, this could mean your overall health suffers. Your limited meal options deny you essential nutrients, and your limited speech could impact how you communicate. As your quality-of-life lowers, you could also develop an aged appearance, as the lack of natural teeth means the jaw begins to break down and shrink causing sunken cheeks and a ptotic chin, along with other signs of aging. But with a set of dentures, we restore function and beauty to your smile again.
Traditional Prosthetics
Our team can provide traditional removable dentures to address your tooth loss. A full addresses every tooth on one or both arches, and a partial addresses cases in which gaps are spread out across the smile, but a full isn’t necessary. These are custom-made for your smile based on detailed images and impressions we take of your jaw. The prosthetic will contain an acrylic base that looks like gum tissue, and ceramic teeth that not only look natural, but can handle daily bite forces too. The full is held in place with suction or the assistance of a special adhesive and the partial is held in place with metal clasps that attach to the remaining natural teeth. These tend to last about 5 to 10 years, requiring replacement as your jaw ridge changes shape.
Hybrid Dentures
With Hybrid Dentures, we will insert dental implants in the arch, and these will act as new roots, preventing the changes to the jaw ridge and strength of the jaw that follows tooth loss. Once these fuse to your jaw, we will attach abutments to the posts and connect your prosthetic, so you have a set that is not removable and is instead fixed in place. These tend to last much longer, never slip, and can look and function like natural teeth. If you have any questions about dentures, then contact our team today to learn more.
