When Do You Need A Partial Denture?

shrewsbury partial denture

In our last blog, we discussed how we secure bridges to take on minor tooth loss and avoid surgery. But what if you have more than one gap in your smile? Whether removable or implant-supported, we can offer help with a partial prosthetic. In today’s blog, your Shrewsbury, MA, dentist talks about when smiles need a partial denture.

The Impact of Complex Tooth Loss

A complex case of tooth loss is one in which a person has multiple gaps in their smile spread out across the arch of the upper or lower jaw. This could be too severe to be treated with a bridge, but you may still have enough natural teeth in place that removing any to make room for a full prosthetic is unnecessary. In these situations, we can help with a partial. Otherwise, tooth loss could allow misalignment to develop, along with issues eating your favorite foods or even speaking clearly. You could also feel embarrassed about your appearance, allowing your tooth loss to have a negative impact on your quality of life. But we can help with a set of dentures.

Creating Your Custom Dental Prosthetic

How do we create a set of partial dentures? Your prosthetic will be custom-made to ensure it fits comfortably and offers a lifelike appearance. To begin, we will examine your smile to see if you have any teeth that need to be extracted. We will then take detailed digital images of your bite from multiple angles, and use the information to design and craft the prosthetic. The partial will contain new teeth made from ceramic and shaded to blend with your smile. These will be connected to a base made from acrylic that looks like gum tissue. Metal clasps will connect to natural teeth to keep your partial firmly in place.

Attaching Your New Denture

There will be two options available. The most common is removable, and as we mentioned above, will be held in place with clasps that connect to natural teeth. But we could also insert multiple dental implants into the jaw and connect the prosthetic to them. This option will be fixed in place, never needing to be removed for cleaning or soaking. This can also last far longer than the 5 to 10 years that a removable one does. In fact, this could offer tooth replacement for decades to come, even a lifetime in some cases.
